Highlights

• Learn from and reflect with MU faculty who are already using art as pedagogy in broad and unexpected disciplines. Presenters include: Dr. Scott Dale (Languages, Literatures and Cultures), Dr. Deirdre Dempsey (Theology), Ms. Kali Murray (Law), and Mr. Richard Tobin (Accounting);
• Join artist Alexis Rockman and Northern Michigan University biologist Dr. Jill Leonard in exploring art and environment as pedagogy within the context of the Haggerty Museum of Art’s spring exhibition Alexis Rockman: The Great Lakes Cycle, which explores the past, present, and future of one of the most emblematic and ecologically significant environments;
• Tour the Haggerty vaults where permanent collection work is stored;
• Discover art and environment as innovative pedagogical tools by experiencing an artist-created 3D animation (at the Marquette Visualization Laboratory) that illustrates Dr. Michael Schläppi’s process of growing cold-tolerant domesticated Asian rice at a test plot in Mequon, Wisconsin.

Learning Objectives

• Learn how to utilize art as a pedagogical tool for teaching in any discipline;
• Reflect on our mission to empower students to care for the Earth and the environment and be change-agents in their chosen field;
• Develop a simple action plan for incorporating art and/or environment into some part of your curriculum.
